I worked at Tree of Life for 2 years. At first it seemed like a calm and transparent environment to work in. As a consumer I also began to purchase more from there. Firstly it was required of us to where current stock but also I was under the impression that it was fair trade. They constantly where asking us to tell every customer that the company is unique to other retailers as they are "looking after their staff over seas" and that the way they produce the items is in a "fair trade manner". I can tell you this is untrue. Firstly the fair trade label has to be earned and if you sell a product as fair trade it has have the label on it which is approved by the fair trade organisation. Tree of life has actually added the the words "fair trade" on some of their items, not the authentic label. secondly they say that the conditions of their workers in India are good. This is also untrue as the conditions in the stores in Australia are not good. There is constant workplace bullying going on and even my manager was spoken to in a derogatory manner on the phone by one of the owners. They also give casuals very little hours like 10 hrs a week and then expect them to purchase current clothing which could cost up to $60 dollars a piece. Then they complain when you where the same thing often. They have very poor interpersonal skills and don't practice what they preach when they are in the stores. so if this is going on here in Aus imagine what is going on in India. They also have claimed that their t shirts are made from organic cotton which clearly the the tad does not say it is organic and also they have items made in china when they are claiming that they are fair trade and helping communities in India. Please do not enable this company to pretend they are fair by participating in this lie. Tree of Life is only making the problems and inequality worse.
